Is Roleo free?
Yes. The free tier gives you an 8K token context window, free Roleo AI models, bring-your-own-model support, automatic memory summarization, unlimited characters and chats, and the ability to publish characters after review. Paid Patreon tiers only increase the context window — Pro to 16K, Max to 32K.
Do my chats leave my browser?
No. Conversations are stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB. Only your Patreon sign-in session is stored on the server. Chat messages themselves are never persisted server-side.
Which AI models can I use?
Four options: Roleo AI (free OpenRouter models, rate-limited), OpenRouter (bring your own key — free and paid models supported), LM Studio / Ollama running on localhost, or any custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint you control.
Do I need a paid Patreon membership?
No. Sign-in is via Patreon for identity, but a paid membership is not required. A free Patreon account is enough to use the free tier. Paid tiers exist only to increase the context window from 8K to 16K (Pro) or 32K (Max) tokens.
Can I publish my own characters?
Yes. Characters you create can be submitted for human review and, once approved, become publicly discoverable. Public characters can be added to any user's library. Edits to a live public character stay hidden until a moderator approves the change — the current version stays visible while your edit is in review. If an edit is declined, nothing changes and a 24-hour cooldown applies.
What is layered memory?
When a conversation approaches the model's token limit, older messages are automatically condensed into dense summaries. The AI keeps continuity across long roleplays without you losing your place, and you can review or clear the memory at any time from the chat sidebar.
